Descoberto fóssil de um réptil mamaliano em Moçambique

Ricardo Araújo e Rui Castanhinha decobriram um fóssil de um réptil mamaliano durante sua viagem a Moçambique no verão passado. Trata-se de um fóssil quase completo, com 15 cm de comprimento. O seu estudo ainda não foi concluido, tendo sido somente atribuído aos sinapsídeos. Os investigadores ainda não sabem se trata de uma nova espécie, ou de um indivíduo jovem de alguma espécie já conhecida dentro dos répteis mamalianos. Os répteis mamalianos apresentam características de répteis e de mamíferos. E esta nova descoberta poderá ajudar a compreender a história evolutiva dos mamíferos.
